The Ely Area received another couple of inches of snow overnight. We are at about 10+ inches of snow on the ground. There is a 30% chance of more snow tonight. Don’t miss out on the Fun Run Snowmobile Ride this Saturday, January 26 in the Ely Area. The temperatures are expected to be mild, trails are groomed, chances for great prizes and great fun! It’s not too late....you can sign up on the day of the event at any one of the checkpoints. Come on out and suppo...

Ely Area Trail Conditions - December 7, 2012

Warmer temperatures this past week have taken out some of the snow we received over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Ely Area has about 0-2 inches of snow on the ground at this time.

Snowmobile Trails

MN State Snowmobile Trails officially open on December 1. A recent law change: A snowmobile that is registered after July 1, 2012 and received 06/30/2015 expiration does not need the snowmobile state trail sticker to operate on state or grant-in-aid trails. The snowm...

As life-long residents of Minnesota, we had never been to this small Northern Minnesota town and were looking for a new area to explore with our 3 boys. We decided to stay at the Grand Ely Lodge where we were able to canoe, kayak, fish, play lawn games and relax....

Tourist Journal - Things I Remember (part 3)

By Dave Busch

Well, the first day of fishing has come and gone. The outboard ran well enough that we can now venture to Newton and Pipestone lakes. This means leaving early, portaging twice, and leaving enough time to do it all over again on the return trip that evening. Hope the weather holds!!

In my earlier writings, I mentioned Paul and Edna Summers. They owned and operated Pipestone Outfitting located in Winton, now Packsack. Paul and Edna had built a resort on t...

Tourist Journal - Rounnd Lake Trip

By Lonnie Tim Cofell

We had a great trip going through Brante lake toVirgin lake and seeing the burn area. Going down the frost river portages over rocks that were 5 to Six feet high. Beautiful scenes that you don't see in the cities.

<img align="bottom" alt="46fb.jpg" height="187" src="http://www.ely.org/images/blog/62/46fb.jpg...

By Dave Busch

When I last wrote, I ended my story with arriving at Pipestone Outfitting in Winton. Remember, this was in the 60s. The new owners have changed the name to Packsack Log Cabins. I think the cabins look great and, although the basic structures have not changed, there have been some significant upgrades completed.

I can remember walking down the hill to see the dock, knowing that the next day would include some wonderful Fall Lake fishing. Power dam, her...

My visits to the Ely area started in the 1960s when the whole family would pile in the “now unsafe” automobile and head for the vacation of all vacations!

My dad would spend a couple hours loading the vehicle, making sure that nothing would slide, move, or get squashed on the 600 mile trek to our destination. Dad took great pride in packing and I remember that everything that we were taking had to be at the rear of the vehicle so he could strategically place all item...

We had a great time and will be back.

I love to cook and figuring out ways to be gourmet in the woods is fun! For this trip I brought along fresh focaccia fixings with olive oil, rosemary, and garlic. We like to bring a little luxury along when we go camping. One of my fa...

I purposely planned smaller steps and tried to plant my feet on solid surfaces. At times, the girls would veer off and try their own routes, sometimes they would do fine and other times they would slip and reach out for me. That walk...

Most of them were in the spring and summer months or the occasional ice fishing day-trip in the winter. This past September, I took my first “late fall” camping trip with my two cousins and their spouses. It was their very first canoe camping trip in the BWCA so I served as the guide a...

Birding with Bill Session 5 by Jo Kovach

The wonderful rain had frozen overnight and all the buds were encased in ice. That’s spring in northern Minnesota.

As we piled into the van (all hatted and gloved again!), Bill told us we were headed out to scratch trees. Scratch trees? Well, if you scratch at the base of a tree having cavities in which birds are nesting, the birds will pop their heads out. Our target was Pileated Woodpeckers. We drove out to the area around the Kawishiwi Campground (Highway #1, just after the se...

Birding with Bill Session 4 by Jo Kovach

It was a crisp 26 degrees when I pulled into the parking lot to meet the “birding” van. The sun had been up for an hour, rising over an hour earlier than at our first session. We headed out for one of the few open areas in our town – the cemetery. It is apparently a Mecca for birds.

We checked four Bluebird boxes and found “reservations” in three of them. It seems that Eastern Bluebirds are very careful about the placement of even the earliest pie...

We met again before the rest of the world was stirring – interesting to note that the sun was already up – what a difference a week makes. Also not as cold.

Bill took us to Winton to begin the morning. He reminded us that it is always good birding in Winton. Between the twisting of the Shagawa River and the meandering shoreline of Fall Lake, one can always see something in motion. But be aware that most of the areas are private land.

Bill set up his marvelo...

The sun was well up when we assembled at 6 AM, but it still was cold and we were all gloved and hatted. This week we had one focus: Great Blue Herons. Bill took us to the rookery on Eagles Nest. I didn’t even know that Ely had a rookery, and it turns out there are at least two.

Finding the rookery is not easy. I’d suggest that anyone not really familiar with the area find a guide. From the Eagles Nest Road we turned west on to Walsh Rd., then wound along that ext...

We met at 6 a.m. (!) in the parking lot outside Vermilion Community College. Eight of us piled into a van with the heater going on high. It was a brisk 28 degrees. The sun was just beginning to show on the eastern horizon. Today is the first of a six-session field-based class on the Ely-area birds. I was lucky to get a spot on the roster.

Around 6:20, Bill Tefft (VCC instructor) started us out near the Birch Lake Dam on Highway 1 south of Ely.
