Call for Local Artists: Living with Wildfire Exhibition

The "Living with Wildfire" are exhibition seeks to highlight experiences and reflections about wildlife from residents' perspectives and how it has or will change the woods that surround us through two and three-dimensional visual artworks. Eligibility: Ely residents of all ages are encouraged to submit visual artworks depicting their relationship with the woods and how wildfire would affect it and our community. All types of two and three-dimensional visual mediums are encouraged, including: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glassworks, metalworks, photography. Deadline for Statement of Intent submission: May 1st, 2016. Deadline for artwork submission (in JPG form): June 17, 2016. Exhibition Dates: August 1-31, 2016. Winning submissions will be voted upon by Ely community members, Accepted artists will be notified in mid-July, Display Requirements: art must be your own original work; artwork must be labeled with title, artists' name, orientation and be ready for hanging with matting, framing and/or rigid backing and applicable hanging apparatus. Artist responsible for delivery of artwork as scheduled by set up team. Art must remain on display the entire length of the show. All artwork will be handled with extreme care, however set us team is not responsible for any loss or damage. Introduction to Milling Your Own Lumber Saturday, June 18, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm with Mark Olson Tuition: $35, Materials: $30 Ever wondered how a huge, gnarled old pine becomes handsome wall board & fine furnishings? In this class, you’ll learn all about the milling process and witness the operation of a Wood Mizer portable mill. First we’ll discuss sourcing options for local logs and the different cutting configurations for maximizing the volume & quality of lumber from a milled tree. Then you’ll join in operating the Wood Mizer for hands-on experience with how the cuts are made to produce fine saw timber. You’ll leave the course with a large blank of lumber milled to your specs that you can craft for a home project. Instructor Mark Olson has been crafting wood for over 20 years. The course will take place in Winton alongside the beautiful new timberframe workshop he’s built from lumber he milled himself and ceiling boards recycled from Sigurd Olson’s Border Lakes Outfitting building.

Rosemaling Basics

Sunday, May 15 11:00am-5:00pm with Kim Garrett. Tuition: $65 Materials: $15. This is a basic course in the Norwegian folkart of rosemaling. Rosemaling means “rose or flower painting” in Norwegian, and is done in many styles reflective of specific regions of Norway. This class will focus on the Telemark style, known for it’s graceful scrolls and fantasy flowers. We will start with the basic strokes of rosemaling, progress through color mixing and working with oil paints, and finally paint a small plaque to take home. No experience necessary. Kim has studied this traditional Scandinavian craft with American master painters and Norwegian rosemaling instructors both here and in Norway since 2007 and has created several award winning pieces.
