| Description: | Communion in Song is the stuff of Theater Church services are not the usual stuff of theater, but that is what you get with Carol Hall’s To Whom it May Concern, the musical to be presented by NLAA this fall. Hall had a trunkful of wonderful songs that she wanted to put together into a show, and chose to use a church service as a framework from which congregants could break out of the liturgy and share their inner thoughts, feelings and stories through monologue and song. Hall tells these stories with refreshing ease, and the songs range from gospel numbers to hymns to ballads and folk ditties. They become a celebration of the character’s needs to question and to connect. The connection between the actors and audience, for Carol Hall, is a kind of communion and becomes a definition of theater. The script, the music and the actors all work together to create a theatrical world that celebrates the diversity of life. The Ely actor/singers who will portray these characters include Justine Carlson, Cindy Dieter, Paula Gawboy, Cathe Gucciardo, Mike Hillman, Jonathan Huisman, Nathan Huisman, Meghan Jarecki, Laurie Kess, Sabrina Larson, Angela Olson, Michael Plante, Karin Schmidt, Steve Schon, and Giles Trudeau. The Choirmaster and accompanist is Irene Hartfield, which makes a cast of 16, unusual for a fall play in Ely. The show is directed by Sally Bronski Childs, with Musical Direction by Sue Germek. Denise Drechsler will choreograph, Nicole Vander Heiden will stage manage, Barb Henning will gather props, and Peter Kess will create the set and lighting. The show opens at the Fine Arts Theater at Vermilion Community College on Thursday, October 25th and continues through Sunday, November 4. Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. on October 25, 26, 27, 30, Nov. 1 and 2; matinees at 2 p.m. are scheduled on Sundays, October 28 and November 4. Tickets will be made available soon through http://www.elytickets.com |
