If you are brand new to canoeing or have padded some but want to improve your efficiency, refine your steering, or feel confident in wind or waves (and know when to stay off the water), this class is for you. You will start learning the basics: putting the canoe in the water and getting in and out - not just on a sandy beach, but on slippery rocks or from knee-deep mud. You will learn about loading gear into the canoe to improve stability, paddling forward in a straight line and steering, and rescuing yourself or others after a capsize. Safety will be emphasized. Portaging and securing a canoe to a car roof will be covered as time permits. Paddlers without partners and solo canoes are welcome. Registration required at www.elyfolkschool.org.

There is a limit of three adults per canoe or two adults and two children. Class size is limited to four canoes. This class will be held outside, so dress appropriately. Bring rain gear, a warm layer, and dry clothes in case of capsize. We will be wading knee-deep, so wear shoes that can get wet. You must have a life jacket fits well. Cost: $35 + bring your own canoe (approx. $20 if rented). Each class is 9 am until noon.

Additional classes offered on: June 11, June 17, June 27, July 2, July 18, July 23, August 1, August 15, August 20, August 29, and September 5

If you want to make a fun and useful sewing creation, a pillowcase (or two) is a great project for you to sew on your own. This half day course, from 1 to 4 pm, will teach you the basics of sewing; how to cut your fabric, sew seams together so they will not ravel, and get help with pressing. Then take it home and sleep on it!

Fabric cost for one pillowcase is $8, two for $15. To make your pillowcase especially unique, pick out fabric that you really like: stop by the fabric store (Mary's Spinning Wheel, 126 E. Sheridan St.) in Ely the morning of class, and they will give you a discount on fabric that you choose. There are many cool options for girls and boys. You will need 3/4 yard for the main part of the pillowcase and 1/4 yard for the cuff. Supplying your own sewing machine is best, but contact us should you need one.

For the 30th year, the air in downtown Ely will resonate with the sound of loons. No, it is not an invasion of the two-legged bird, but rather residents and visitors taking part in a contest to be crowned as Loony Day champions! Kids and adults alike will compete with their best imitations of the popular bird. Past events have drawn large crowds for the loon call of the contestants, many of whom return each year to battle for first place in their respective age brackets. Spectators also have a chance to win! There will be three random drawings for prize packages valued at approximately $100 each (must register and must be present to win). Event time is 2:30 p.m.

Loony Day is sponsored by the Ely Echo, Piragis Northwoods, the Chocolate Moose, the Ely Chamber of Commerce and participating merchants.

Keeping a personal journal is a wonderful way to connect with the world around you, to document important events, and to remember and reflect upon things that range from ordinary to sublime. In this class, from 10 am to 3 pm, we will explore both written and visual note-taking, find out what we want from our own journal-keeping, and work with some ideas and prompts that others have found useful. Students may bring and work in journals of their own choice, or we will have spiral-bound blank journals available for purchase. A supply list of quite ordinary tools (pencils, pens, etc.) for students to bring will be provided prior to the class, and other supplies will be available for students to try. Cost: $35. Registration required: sign-up at www.elyfolkschool.org.
