With Fred Livesay, $180 tuition + $20 materials - April 29, 30, and May 1, 9am -5pm Spoons are what might be called a "gateway drug" to green woodworking. Once hooked, there's no telling where spoon carving may lead you. Scandinavian culture is rich with spoons; from the simple to the sublime. Students enrolled for this class, will begin with a basic project to build knife skills, then progress to carving a spoon or two. The days will be interspersed with hands-on demonstrations, such as sharpening and painting and short topic talks on spoon design, wood choice and finishes. Instructor will supply all needed materials & have tools for student use. Fred Livesay carved his first spoon at age 7 and has never stopped. Now, at age 51, he has 44 years of spoon carving experience and over 30 years of teaching the craft. Fred is recognized as one of this country's best spoon carvers. When 14, he began a formal 7 year carriage and wheelright apprenticeship. He is a founding instructor of North House Folk School! While he makes his living as a carpenter, crafting and teaching the traditions and the 'how to' of the hand-made object remains his passion and joy. For more details please check out the Ely Folk School website below. Three day class.

This program presented by Patricia Owen focuses on creating a graphic memoir page-a story of a person’s day in words and pictures. The focus is on “today”; discover and capture the beauty, whimsy, or commonality of everyday life, and honor it. Using simple techniques, each person-regardless of skill level-creates a colorful, fun, and meaningful graphic memoir page suitable for framing. The end result is a panoply of pages illustrating the theme of “reflecting about aging.” This program is funded in whole or in part by money from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. 3:30 PM

May 24 @ 3:30 pm - Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians - for teens and adults What have you always wanted to know about Indians? There are eleven reservations in Minnesota, many throughout the Arrowhead Region, but the native and nonnative worlds rarely interact in a way that lets us really learn from one another. With an eye for safe space and a deep knowledge of the Ojibwe language, culture, and history, Anton Treuer is coming to answer your questions. Treuer published 14 books, including Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask. This presentation is a conversation—with you. Bring your questions and your perspective. This program is funded in whole or in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The ancient craft of basketry has evolved into countless techniques. The “plaiting” process results in baskets with an open weave that are strong & functional but also geometrically intriguing in their wicker, twilled, checkered or hexagonal styles. In this class, you’ll be provided with rough splints pounded from native black ash limbs that you’ll cut to width and thickness as desired. Then you’ll learn to weave them. Choose between a pouch or basket base. From that foundation, you’ll turn up the splints to weave the main body and finish with the rim. This technique is extremely versatile. In face, chicken coops and even house walls have been crafted in this fashion. Zac Fittipaldi has taught at Wisconsin’s Driftless Folk School & elsewhere (including Mexico) for nearly a decade. His other traditional skill interests include maple sugaring, trapping and ancestral pottery.

Saturday, May 28, 9:00am-5:00pm with Zac Fittipaldi Tuition: $80, Materials: $10
