Writers Read is still meeting -- only once per month, first Thursday of the month. The Front Porch is on their winter hours closing at 5 pm, so the group has been meeting at the Forest Service Office (1393 Hwy 169 - across from the Wolf Center). Meetings will be held at the Forest Service until May, when they will be back at the Front Porch.

The group throws out an optional topic each month. People are welcome to bring anything they are working on rather than writing on the group topic. Any genre welcome. Shy writers do not have to share anything until they are comfortable. New writers are always welcome!

Empty Bowl is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists on a community level: Thinking globally, acting locally.

Local potters create a number of bowls and at the event a simple meal is served. Guests attending the event choose a bowl to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests contribute the suggested donation.

The simple meal consists of soup, bread and beverage all donated by local restaurants, grocery stores and bakeries. All proceeds of this event benefit the Ely Area Food Shelf.

Location of this event is St. Anthony's Church Hall, Ely. 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm

The Empty Bowl concept was the brain child of teacher John Harton, a high school art teacher in Michigan in 1990, who joined a drive to raise charitable money and challenged his students to make a personal difference. The concept developed and the Imagine/Render Group, a 501(c) 3 organization was created to promote the project. It is now an international project to raise money and awareness in an effort to end hunger and food insecurity. As a result many small communities have now joined this endeavor.
