5 Steps to Planning an Ely Snowmobiling Adventure
- Get your registration. Every snowmobile state and province requires that your snowmobile be properly licensed or registered. These requirements vary from state to state. Licensing information for Minnesota is available here.
- Check your equipment. There are many different types of snowmobiles that vary in horsepower, size, weight, performance, terrain-friendliness and more. Be sure to choose one that is right for you when you rent or buy. Ask yourself: one or two riders? What type of trail? What is my experience level? Don’t forget the right clothing, helmets and accessories!
- Know the trail conditions. Snowfall is different based on location. In Ely, we need 18-20" of snow on the snowmobile trails for an ideal experience. Check the trails here once the season is underway.
- Reserve lodging. You’ll be beat after a long day on the trails. Ely boasts accommodations for large and small groups where you can rest and rejuvenate for another great ride!
- Pick your trails! Experience the Taconite Trail, Tomahawk Trail, spur trails like the Fishing Lake, Stony or Little Grassy; and miles of lake trails. Tree cover surrounds the trail edges and the lack of traffic allows you to have a true wilderness experience. The Taconite’s many spurs and loops make for some quality modern day pioneering.
