(BPT) - If there’s one way that adventure travel has changed in the past decade or so it’s how we share our adventures. Gone are the days of the dreaded slide show of your friends' trip. Now, it's all about social media. Check-ins, live streams, live journaling, blogging, pictures, videos — the list goes on.
When it comes to sharing adventures on social media, there’s one platform that dominates all the rest: Instagram.
Capturing that perfect shot that encompasses the mood and splendor of the scene is a challenge many have embraced. It’s part adventure, part art, and Ely has some spectacular shots to add to your bucket list.
-
The canoe bow shot. Get up early in the morning, go for a paddle on a lake (the water tends to be the most still in the morning), and in the soft dawn light, snap a picture of the lake, the forest and the bow of the canoe pointing to all that magnificent wilderness.
-
A lakeside camp fire. Around sunset, shortly before it gets too dark, is the perfect time to capture the spirit of camp life. With a lake in the background, make sure you have a bright, orange fire burning and a few people sitting or standing around it. If you capture this right, the silhouettes of the people around the orange flames will create an iconic image.
-
A unique downtown. Downtown Ely is a blend of classic small-town America with wilderness funk, public art and a je ne sais quoi you won’t find anywhere else. Make sure you have plenty of memory on your phone!
-
Kawishiwi Falls. Just a few miles east of Ely is one of the area’s most spectacular falls. The round-trip hike to Kawishiwi Falls is only about an hour, but once you get there you’ll have more than a few photo opportunities of you looking up at the falls, or down on it from a cliff.
-
The region’s heritage. Mining is a big part of the region’s economy and heritage. Instagram opportunities abound at the Pioneer Mine, on the north side of Miner’s Lake, or on a tour of the Soudan Underground Mine State Park.
-
Spectacular lookouts. Along the rocky shores of the many lakes in the area are innumerable opportunities to capture that favorite of favorite Instagram shots of someone looking out from a cliff or high point. Wondering where to go? Ask any of the outfitters or lodge owners and they’ll point you in the right direction.
There are too many Instagram opportunities to list here. Like other top destinations, Ely is chock-full of unique, interesting sites to experience, snap and share.
