Wrap yourself in tradition with a beautiful blanket coat or choose to make a different style like a car coat, a poncho, or a blanket coat with a little more tailoring. Woodsmen and Native Americans alike favored blanket coats as practical, warm, comfortable, easy-to-make coats. Learn how to design a coat custom-fit for you without even using a pattern! You will learn how to measure, cut, construct, and hand-sew your coat. Decorative stitches used for constructing the pieces and embellishing the final garment will be introduced. You don’t need to have any experience, really! Come, learn, have some fun, and walk away with a coat, ready to wear or ready to finish at home.
Students will need to bring a new or used full size (double) blanket, 80” x 90” or larger or an equivalent measure of wool fabric. Other types of fabric can be used, but will hang differently.
About the instructors: Betty Firth and Heidi Breaker both have a long history of doing a lot of different things, and making a unique coat that suited their style is one of those things. They decided it would be fun to teach others how to do it, so come help them have fun.
