Phyllis Root will be reading her book Plant a Pocket of Prairie.Taking young readers on a trip to one of Minnesota’s important ecosystems—the prairie—teaching children how changes in one part of the system affect every other part. The book shows what happens when we work to restore the prairies, encouraging readers to “plant a pocket of prairie” in their own backyards.
Deb Funk will also be reading the children’s book “Flight of the Honey Bee” by Raymond Huber. A story of a tiny honey bee who emerges from the hive for the first time. Using sunlight, landmarks, and scents to remember the path, she goes in search of pollen and nectar to share with the thousands of other bees in her hive. She uses her powerful sense of smell to locate the flowers that sustain her, avoids birds that might eat her, and returns home to share her finds with her many sisters. Nature lovers and scientists-to-be are invited to explore the fascinating life of a honey bee.
Childrens activities to follow each reading.

About the Instructor: Deb Funk began raising honey bees as a hobby after retiring. Through that experience, she came to learn how important they are to our food supply. Working with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the Ely Area Bee Club she has obtained seed packets that contain a mix of pollinator seed.
