August 13, 2019 | 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Meetings are at the Grand Ely Lodge at noon on Tuesdays. More information will be available closer to the meeting dates.
This week we welcome our own regular attendee and oft-time presenter, retired physics professor Barb Jones and her program entitled “A Grand Tour of the Neighborhood.”
She will discuss the earth’s place in the solar system and in the larger neighborhood. We know there are planets around almost all of the other stars in our Milky Way galaxy, called exoplanets. Are there other planets that might have life? How many? Where are they? What about Mars and Venus in our own solar system? Recent observations show that many exoplanets are suitable for water/carbon based life. Future NASA missions and ground based telescopes should help us understand more about conditions on these newly discovered planets. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) asks the big questions about astrobiology and the possibility of other life in our galaxy.
