Ready to ditch the asphalt and crank up the adrenaline? Ely isn't just a place to visit—it's where you trade in your to-do list for a thrilling, dirt-splattered adventure. If you've been dreaming of an off-road escape, strap in, because the Ely area’s Prospector Loop trail system is calling your name.
Over 250 Miles of Pure Adrenaline
Forget boring loops. Here, you have over 250 miles of trails that promise a ride for every vibe and skill level. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing, scenic cruise through the towering northern forest or a rugged, backcountry route that challenges your gear (and your guts!), the Prospector Loop delivers. It’s the kind of riding that connects you directly to the raw, untamed heart of Northern Minnesota.
Your Adventure Starts Here
We’ve made it easier than ever to jump straight into the action. The new Ely Regional Trailhead building (located at 15 S. 4th Ave. W.) is your perfect launchpad. Think of it as a cozy welcome center for your off-road adventure:
- Prep & Plan: Grab a Prospector Loop Map or load up the Ride Command App for digital navigation.
- Refresh: Use the sparkling clean restrooms and fill up your water bottles.
- Connect: You'll step right out of the building onto the Prospector ATV Trail, the Mesabi Trail, and even the David Dill Taconite Snowmobile Trail (the first 10 miles are open to off-road vehicles!).
Scenic Sights You Can Only See on Four Wheels
While the entire system is incredible, there are a few must-see spots that make the ride truly memorable:
- The Kawishiwi River Crossing: Head east out of Ely for one of the most scenic routes. You’ll rumble across a classic steel bridge over the beautiful Kawishiwi River—a perfect photo opportunity, especially with the picnic site waiting for you on the west side.
- Ride Through History: The Jackpot Loop offers more than just twisty turns. It skirts the edge of the area affected by the 2021 Greenwood Forest Fire, giving you a powerful, up-close look at nature's cycles of destruction and rebirth.
- Endless Connections: Whether you're aiming for the Mattila Shelter to take a break before heading toward the North Shore, or connecting trails near Purvis Lake to find the new Beaver River Bridge, you'll feel like you have the entire wilderness at your fingertips.
Ride Right Into Town
One of the best parts about off-roading in Ely? We welcome you! Feel free to use almost all city streets and avenues to get around town. Need to grab a bite, fill up on gas, or pick up supplies? Just hop off your machine—the only spots off-limits are the main thoroughfare of Sheridan Street and Highway 1.
Come experience the thrill of the ride and the unmatched beauty of the Ely area. Your perfect off-roading adventure is waiting!
